{"id":19,"date":"2011-11-14T18:19:32","date_gmt":"2011-11-14T23:19:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scallender.info\/?page_id=19"},"modified":"2013-02-15T22:54:40","modified_gmt":"2013-02-16T03:54:40","slug":"foundation-of-calligraphy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/scallender.info\/?page_id=19","title":{"rendered":"Foundation of Calligraphy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This was the first sheet (below) I received from Professor Young many years ago (without change)!\u00a0 It&#8217;s important to include the Chinese characters for the terms used in Chinese calligraphy, especially since we are going to learn to write Chinese with the brush.\u00a0 I had one advantage over my fellow students since I already knew how to write Chinese and could use a Chinese dictionary.\u00a0 I was told to find a teacher that could teach me Chinese Calligraphy.\u00a0 While walking around during lunchtime I walked pass the China Institute on\u00a0 East 65th Street near Lexington Avenue.\u00a0\u00a0 I stopped in and got a brochure, the rest is history.\u00a0 I signed up for two classes:\u00a0 Cantonese and Chinese Calligraphy.\u00a0 This is where I met Professor Young.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A GLANCE AT CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY\u00a0 (continued)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Those who want to learn Chinese painting should learn calligraphy first.<\/p>\n<p>The basic structure (or components) of Chinese calligraphy is based on six origins or six sources (<a title=\"Show information about all characters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mdbg.net\/chindict\/chindict.php?wdqr=%E5%85%AD%E6%9B%B8%7C%E5%85%AD%E4%B9%A6&amp;wdrst=1\">\u516d<wbr \/>\u66f8<\/a>), namely:<\/p>\n<p>L.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Imitative Symbols, Hsiang-Hsing(<a title=\"Show information about all characters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mdbg.net\/chindict\/chindict.php?page=worddict&amp;wdrst=1&amp;wdqb=six\">\u8c61<wbr \/>\u5f62<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Indicative Symbols, Chih-Shih \u00a0(<a title=\"Show information about all characters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mdbg.net\/chindict\/chindict.php?page=worddict&amp;wdrst=1&amp;wdqb=six\">\u6307<wbr \/>\u4e8b<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Phonetic Compounds, Hsing-Sheng (\u5f62\u8072)<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Logical Combinations, Hui-I (<a title=\"Show information about all characters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mdbg.net\/chindict\/chindict.php?page=worddict&amp;wdrst=1&amp;wdqb=six\">\u6703<wbr \/>\u610f<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Chuan-chu (<a title=\"Show information about all characters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mdbg.net\/chindict\/chindict.php?page=worddict&amp;wdrst=1&amp;wdqb=six\">\u8f49<wbr \/>\u6ce8<wbr \/><\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Chia-chieh \u00a0both (<a title=\"Show information about all characters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mdbg.net\/chindict\/chindict.php?page=worddict&amp;wdrst=1&amp;wdqb=six\">\u5047<wbr \/>\u501f<\/a>) \u00a0both of which must be mentioned though neither has ever gained the universal acceptance of the other four.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese Calligraphy has been in existence for over four thousand years.<\/p>\n<p>The styles have changed from time. to time. Generally, one can classify them into four styles, namely, Seal (<a title=\"Show information about all characters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mdbg.net\/chindict\/chindict.php?page=worddict&amp;wdrst=1&amp;wdqb=seal\">\u7bc6<\/a> <a title=\"Show information about all characters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mdbg.net\/chindict\/chindict.php?page=worddict&amp;wdrst=1&amp;wdqb=book\">\u66f8<\/a>) Official (<a title=\"Show information about all characters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mdbg.net\/chindict\/chindict.php?page=worddict&amp;wdrst=1&amp;wdqb=Chinese+writing\">\u96b8<wbr \/>\u66f8<\/a>), Grass (<a title=\"Show information about all characters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mdbg.net\/chindict\/chindict.php?page=worddict&amp;wdrst=1&amp;wdqb=calligraphy\">\u8349<wbr \/>\u66f8<\/a>), and Standard (<a title=\"Show information about all characters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mdbg.net\/chindict\/chindict.php?page=worddict&amp;wdrst=1&amp;wdqb=model\">\u6977<\/a><a title=\"Show information about all characters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mdbg.net\/chindict\/chindict.php?page=worddict&amp;wdrst=1&amp;wdqb=book\">\u66f8<\/a>).\u00a0 When learning one should start with the Standard style.<\/p>\n<p>An important thing is to learn how to master the brushes.\u00a0 There are many books about this. \u00a0To simplify this there are four points as follows:\u00a0 Fingers closed (<a title=\"Show information about all characters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mdbg.net\/chindict\/chindict.php?page=worddict&amp;wdrst=1&amp;wdqb=finger+\">\u6307<\/a>\u5bc6), palm emptied (<a title=\"Show information about all characters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mdbg.net\/chindict\/chindict.php?page=worddict&amp;wdrst=1&amp;wdqb=palm\">\u638c<\/a> <a title=\"Show information about all characters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mdbg.net\/chindict\/chindict.php?page=worddict&amp;wdrst=1&amp;wdqb=empty\">\u7a7a<\/a>), wrist lifted (<a title=\"Show information about all characters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mdbg.net\/chindict\/chindict.php?page=worddict&amp;wdrst=1&amp;wdqb=wrist\">\u8155<\/a>\u61f8) and sit straight (\u8eab\u6b63).<\/p>\n<p>The tools used in calligraphy are brushes, ink stick, paper and ink slab. \u00a0These are called &#8220;the four treasures of the studio\u201d (<a title=\"Show information about all characters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mdbg.net\/chindict\/chindict.php?page=worddict&amp;wdrst=1&amp;wdqb=calligraphy\">\u6587<wbr \/>\u623f<wbr \/>\u56db<wbr \/>\u5bf6<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>l. \u00a0<strong>Brushes: (<\/strong><strong>\u7b46<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0there are three kinds: \u00a0hard, soft,\u00a0 and between (hard and soft mixed) Beginners should use hard or between.<\/p>\n<p>2. \u00a0<strong>Ink Stick<\/strong> (<a title=\"Show information about all characters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mdbg.net\/chindict\/chindict.php?page=worddict&amp;wdrst=1&amp;wdqb=ink\">\u58a8<\/a>)\u00a0 good Chinese ink stick, made of\u00a0 line lamp black soot, is very\u00a0 hard to get in the market. \u00a0For convenience in practice ink fluid can be used but when writing formally the ink stick should be used and I would recommend the use of the round ink stick.<\/p>\n<p>3. \u00a0<strong>Paper (<\/strong><a title=\"Show information about all characters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mdbg.net\/chindict\/chindict.php?page=worddict&amp;wdrst=1&amp;wdqb=paper\">\u7d19<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span> \u00a0there are so many kinds of paper.\u00a0\u00a0 The good one should be neither too rough nor too smooth.\u00a0 When practicing a cheaper paper may be used.<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0 \u00a0<strong>Ink Slab<\/strong> (<a title=\"Show information about all characters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mdbg.net\/chindict\/chindict.php?page=worddict&amp;wdrst=1&amp;wdqb=ink\"><wbr \/>\u786f<\/a>) \u00a0The slab produced in Duan Chow (<a title=\"Show information about all characters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mdbg.net\/chindict\/chindict.php?page=worddict&amp;wdrst=1&amp;wdqb=duan\">\u7aef<\/a>\u5dde), Kwang Tung (\u5ee3\u6771) province is very famous but very expensive.\u00a0 A beginner should buy a-very common slab with a cover for practical use.<\/p>\n<p>To learn or to work at anything it should be done regularly.\u00a0 In practicing calligraphy especially one should do it constantly.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In studying calligraphy not only do you attain the ability to make a nice character but you also enter the door of Chinese art- and culture.\u00a0 Then one can practice painting.<\/p>\n<p>When you practice calligraphy in quiet- surroundings and your mind is peaceful, it is conducive to good health.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This was the first sheet (below) I received from Professor Young many years ago (without change)!\u00a0 It&#8217;s important to include the Chinese characters for the terms used in Chinese calligraphy, especially since we are going to learn to write Chinese &hellip;
